Shortly after ten, after Jake insisted on walking them to the end of the drive because it was dark out, they were back in the car, headed for town.

“That was nice of your sister to think about your…” Rachel trailed off.

“About my?” Lorna prompted, squinting against the glare of an oncoming car with its lights on full-beam.

“Never mind. It was nothing.”

“Then just say it.”

“About your dietary needs. Is that insensitive to say?”

“Nothing you say that is coming from the right place is insensitive. And you’re right. It was nice of her. Becs might have a fight on her hands, though.”

“How so?” Rachel asked.

“That was my espresso machine. I let her have it when I thought lattes were a thing of the past.”

“Now that you know they’re not, will you ask for it back?”

“No.” Lorna didn’t work that way. If she really wanted one, she would buy another.
